I know that student loan payments are taken into account as part of your debt when buying a home. But what about if you're still in school and you aren't making student loan payments yet? We're looking to buy a house in about 5 mos. and in may I'll graduate with a BA, I've include my estimated conslidated student loan payment in our debt. However my husband is entering grad school and we won't be paying back his loans for another 3 yrs. But will that still affect how much we can borrow now for a home?

Ouch! That's a very expensive school. I hope you wouldn't have to borrow that each year for 4 years. My advise: any school that expensive has to have means to pay for it. Talk to the schools financial aid office. Try to start with the federal loans first-max out those amounts- then if you have to go to the private loans, but be careful, those have higher interest rates and fees. I'm attaching a publication. In the back are the maximum amounts you can borrow for fed loans.

Good rule of thumb when borrowing, only borrow total amount of what you can expect to earn your first year upon graduating.

You fill out the Free Application for Financial Aid. Once it's accepted, the government will tell you what your expected financial contribution to your own education is. Next - you apply for financial aid at your university of choice. When they complete your financial aid award, it will indicate whether you are eligilble for a Stafford Student Loan. In most cases, you'll be eligible for at least an unsubsidized Stafford Loan, but if you have unmet need, then you may even qualify for a subsidized Stafford Loan, where the government pays the interest until you begin repayment.

The most important piece to remember is you cannot just apply for a Stafford Loan - you have to have something from your Financial Aid office that says you are eligible. They will also tell you who their preferred lenders are; sometimes it's easiest and most equitable to use them.

It sounds as if you really need a car. That would be better and safer than a car or bus. Remember to save enough out to pay the insurance and gas.

You probably will save money by being able to go to cheaper places and buying your groceries in bulk (which is hard to do in a cab or bus) so I think a car would be a good investment.

And just think, if you want an ice cream cone in the middle of the night,, you can just hop in your car and go. LOL ---I do that sometime.

it all depends really...when i was trying to apply for my loan it was a big mess b/c the school kept srewing up on my hours and therefore on how much the loan would be for. B/c of this i had to wait more to accept all of the final changes and of course the loan. I was worried about the deadline too so i called the fin. aid people and they said the loans wouldn't kick in on time and therefore i would have to get help from a friend or something temporarily or i could take out a tuition loan which would pay tuition until the loans come in. In the end i didn't accept the Wells Fargo Loan but accepted another one through school. All in all, it would probably be helpful if you talked to someone from finaid at your school just to be sure...Good luck! :)
