Offer to pay 60% and clear the debt with the company, not the collection agency. (40% is the collection agency commission)

Make sure you get a letter from the company, in case the collection agency gets mad.

You may get the same result by paying either one of them. Is the account already showing a collection? If it is, You should try and get them to report it as a revolving account even with derogs it wont hurt as bad. Make that a condition to you paying. I doubt that they will remove the account all together from your history. After you have paid up try to establish new credit. Start slow and only charge what you can pay off that month. I like to tell my clients to charge their gas and then pay it in full so they don't get hit with the high interest rate.
