It may be true....you have 6 months after graduation to start paying back loans...federal loans anyway...not sure about private loans, however, there are some situations and/or jobs where you may be able to have the loans discharged such as:

STAFFIRD/PLUS Loans

1. Upon death

2. Full time as a teacher for 5 consecutive years in a designated elementary or secondary school serving students from low income families and there are additional requirements

3. School closed before you could graduate

4. Someone stole your identity to get the loan

PERKINS

1. Same as above

2. Full time special ed teacher in a public or non profit elementary or secondary school

3. Full time professional provider of early intervention services for the disabled

4. Full time teacher of math, science, foreign language, bilingual education, or other fields designated as teacher shortage areas

5. Full time employee of a pubic or nonprofit child or family services agency providing services to high risk children and their families from low income communities

6. Full time nurse or medical tech

7. Full time law enforcement or corrections officer

8. Full time staff member in the education component of a Head Start Program

9. Vista or Peace Corps Volunteer

10. Service in the US Armed Forces

I would be careful with this one. I just graduated and have a job and I am about $20,000 in school loan debt. If you find a way out of it, PLEASE be sure to let me know!! :)

Not that I know of. I know for me and everyone I know that I can withdraw a student loan and not have to pay them back until x amount of time after I graduate. So maybe that is what you are thinking.

Maybe you are talking about a grant instead of a loan?

A grant is money that you don't have to pay back after graduation.
